Rugged coastline and seaside villages

Cape Peninsula is an iconic road trip destination for every traveler visiting South Africa. It is a circular route that loops around Cape Peninsula facing the Atlantic and Indian Ocean. You will witness breathtaking views of the coastline, rugged cliffs, warm white sandy beaches, and plenty of wildlife. So, gear up, get your cameras ready, and see what the Cape Peninsula has to offer.




Starting the journey from Cape Town is the first stop - Hout Bay. Here, you will ascend the legendary Chapman's Peak Drive known to be one of the world's most scenic drives. This 9km route stretches between Hout Bay and Noordhoek and never fails to impress visitors with its winding roads, panoramic ocean views, and towering cliffs. there are plenty of viewpoints and picnic spots for a morning coffee if you want to pack a thermos.


Once you reach Noordhoek, take the road towards the southwestern coastline and venture towards Kommetjie and Misty Cliffs. Here, you will have plenty of opportunities to take photos of the rugged coastline and enjoy the serenity of the ocean. Don't forget to carry a warm jacket, as it can be chilly even on sunny days.


The next stop is The Cape Peninsula National Park, where you can spend the whole day exploring various natural habitats and taking in a wide range of landmarks and wonderful viewpoints. Be sure to explore the Cape Point, which is a landmark at the bottom of the peninsula's rugged cliffs. You'll have to hike the cliffside to reach the lighthouse, but it is a small price to pay for the splendid view of the ocean.


Exiting the park, take the M4, and on your way, stop by at Boulder's Beach to see the famous African Penguins. The place is home to a large penguin colony that has become a favorite spot for tourists and a great opportunity to click some candid pictures.


One excellent midday stop is Simon's Town, being one of the oldest towns in South Africa; Simon's Town has a rich history and many historic sites to visit and lots of options for food.


As the day starts coming to a close, head to Kalk Bay to visit the coastal village that is well-known for its boutique shops and art galleries. Try some seafood from the harbour and dine at one of the charming seaside bistros.


Lastly, take Boyes Drive, a curving road that takes you high above the city, with views of False Bay. The view of Muizenberg's beach will leave a lasting impression on you due to its reputation as a surfers' hotspot.
